Lifestyle Medicine GP with a focus on mental & physical wellbeing

My approach

My name is Dr Theresa Stockwell. I’m a Specialist GP with a special interest in Lifestyle Medicine & Psychological Medicine to address complex health issues affecting our minds, bodies & how we live our lives.

I have a particular interest in helping women dealing with complex issues such as perimenopause & menopause, PCOS, endometriosis and reproductive issues including infertility, pregnancy loss, unplanned pregnancy & perinatal anxiety or depression.

I provide a holistic approach to treating insomnia using a deep understanding of how our minds, bodies and lifestyles can impact a good nights sleep and how sleep quality can impact these factors. I’m accredited as a CBT-I Practitioner with the Australasian Sleep Association and a member of the Society of Behavioural Sleep Medicine.

As a GP trained in psychological & lifestyle medicine, I provide a holistic approach to therapy, incorporating an understanding of the impact our physical health & lifestyles have on our mental health. Together, we can work towards achieving your goals.

  • Insomnia Treatment

As a GP who specialises in lifestyle & psychological medicine, I have a deep understanding of how the body, mind and lifestyle factors impact sleep quality and also how sleep impacts on these factors.

Insomnia assessments are holistic and designed to help us identify barriers to you getting a good nights sleep. A comprehensive treatment plan will be developed based on your individual needs to address your causes for Insomnia.

We will take a look at your physical health, thoughts and behaviours around sleep and lifestyle factors that contribute to sleep quality.

CBT for Insomnia is a very effective program which works for 8 in 10 people. It not only improves sleep just a well as medication in the short term, but out performs medication in the long term, without the side effects and complications. Anyone with Insomnia is eligible for Medicare rebates for CBT-I treatment.

  • Mental Health

As a GP, I provide a compassionate and holistic approach to therapy, incorporating my understanding of the impact our minds, bodies & lifestyles have on our mental health with personalised psychological strategies.

A medical background provides a unique perspective to counselling and therapy for issues such as anxiety and depression, grief and loss, stress/burnout, relationship and sexual issues, insomnia, substance use and addictions, coping with chronic pain, neurodiversity - ADHD & ASD, adjustment to major life transitions and life-changing medical diagnoses, cancer or terminal illness.

Treatments follow the new Lifestyle Based Mental Health Care Guidelines and a range of evidence-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapies including CBT, ACT, DBT, IPT, Schema Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

I’m registered with Medicare to provide GP Focused Psychological Strategies with a Mental Health Care Plan.

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle Medicine is an evidence-based medical specialty which has a much broader perspective to treating health conditions beyond prescribing medications and performing surgery. It’s rapidly gaining recognition for its effectiveness in helping people live happier, healthier and longer lives by addressing the lifestyle factors leading to the rising rates of chronic disease and mental health conditions. Did you know 80% of all chronic diseases being treated in our Australian health system could be prevented with changes to lifestyle?

Lifestyle Medicine is a holistic medical approach and includes the science of behaviour change to help patients prevent chronic diseases from developing. If a chronic disease is present, symptoms can be improved, complications reduced or prevented, and in many cases the disease itself can be reversed. Lifestyle factors addressed with evidence-based interventions include: stress management, diet and nutrition, physical activity, sleep, quality of relationships and social connections, mental and sexual wellbeing, addressing substance use such as smoking and drinking alcohol, the safe de-prescribing of medications and considers how our external environments can have an effect on our health including our workplaces, time in nature and screen use.
